Saturday morning we got up and headed back to hunting camp. We had great plans go to for an afternoon hunt but once we got the trailer put together for the weekend Chris and I both looked at each other and said its nap time. We must have been tired because we all slept for 3 hours. We got ready for the night hunt and headed into our spots. Chris sits in a spot a ways above us. Kennedy and I have to hike down a little further. Right as we were rounding the corner to where we can see down into the bog we saw this guy. A nice 6pt elk 35 yards from us. This is an actual picture from the trail camera right as we were coming in. Unfortunately its a limited entry unit so I cant shoot him. I can only shoot spikes and cows. However Mom has the big bull tag and could have. We've been trying to get her on an elk like this!
Miss K and I got all comfy in the blind. She did great. Its about a 2 mile hike on the way in and then we sat for 3 hours. Well I sat.
She slept. There is actually a blind of branches we made so you cant see her if youre standing outside of the blind.
This is how we bond. She would wake up every little bit and say "I just heard an elk bugle!" (which she really did) or "Shoot anything yet? See anything? Ok." And she would be back to sleep.
It was almost dark when we started the hike out. We let her lead trying to teach her how to follow the slight path in the trail and learn how to walk out. She did pretty dang good.
That night walking out we had a Super moon. It was so pretty!
The elk hunt is pretty much over for us. Our spike tags in that unit end Friday so we brought our camper home with us. We can hunt one more week in a general season unit so we might.
