278-Opening Day of Elk

Opening morning was COLD. 24 degrees. We started out the first hour or so sitting in the truck watching the hillside at the cabin. There were SO many hunters out and around that if we left our piece with out any pressure on it everyone else would push the elk to our piece. We hoped at least! Instead we sat and watched a bunch of deer. There was frost all over the sagebrush. The ground was froze and the puddles were fozen

Whats this!? Peanut crashed in the truck?? With her 'coffee cup'!? Im sure you're all as surprised as we were to see this..
 Glassing around

We had 3 cow tags and 1 spike tag between us all. We found 3 cows and 1 spike down this canyon. It would have been accessible to get them out after they were down but from where we were shooting at was at least 400 yards with a serious downhill grade.. Chris and I both missed the cows.  That was all we saw in shooting range that day. After breakfast we bundled up and went out on the wheelers for a drive.

At first it wasnt too cold. The wind chill wasnt bad. Kennedy fell asleep behind Grandpa. She was in her seat, would recline back and lay her head on the bags and Grandpa sitting in front of her and the bags on the side of her held Kennedy in and she slept. That mountain air just does her in.. not to mention shes wearing a thermal shirt, long sleeved shirt, hoodie, her heavy duck coat and her orange jacket over that, plus thermal bottoms and her hunting pants, wool socks and snow boots.
It was a good thing she was so bundled, we got into some snow way up high in the mountains and it was freezing
At one point we come around a corner and see Todd and Hunter stopped. Each one is on the side of Kennedy putting her mittens on each hand... talk about a princess

After going about a hundred miles on the wheelers and seeing nothing but deer and moose we came back down to the warmth and near the cabin to check out some hillsides around there.
To give you any idea how high we actually were.. see the small pond to the right.. and there are two tiny tiny white dots towards the top of the pond in the grass. Those are deer.

We went back for dinner. There was a really young moose in camp drinking from a puddle of water near the outhouse.

We had a long day. Chris fell asleep next to the fire place
