Thursday evening after Chris got off work we headed back up to the cabin for another round of elk hunting. His dad met us there. We gave him his birthday presents (a Browning bag for duck hunting, a cute fishing rod fly swatter and a fireman sign) We ate sloppy joes, watched The Man from Snowy River and went to bed. That next morning we woke up early and went out to try and find some elk again. The night looked like it was going to snow (which would be great!) but it didnt... We went to some areas to look and see if we could spot herds anywhere with the binoculars. Elk are pretty much a herding animal. You will find a few by themselves here and there but they stick together. There were no elk in at Hardware Ranch. No elk on the hillsides. No elk anywhere. The cold weather makes them get up and walk around in the morning, so if you're going to spot one thats a great time to at least see where the heck they are.
We saw no elk. No signs of elk. No tracks. No poop. Elk smell really strong so if they have been in an area or are you can smell them.. No elk smell. Where we hunt is normally FULL of them.
So instead we got to see some amazing views
We loaded up on the wheelers and headed to walk through one area to see if anything came out of the trees
Nothing came out. So we went all over for a ride! We ended up going almost 100 miles round trip. Kennedy rode with Grandpa and sang him songs the entire ride. She didnt fall asleep once. We were surprised because she was exhausted.
We stopped to have some diet cokes and chocolate. Todd knows exactly what us girls like!! He keeps it in stock lol!
We rode past Old Ephraims grave and went into Temple Flat area. The road used to suck between there and was really rough. Well they tore out the road and made a brand new one! A wide smooth one. The fill in with rocks and trees is the old road.
We drove around and went to Temple Flat area to Mill Hollow by the microwave tower
We took another stop and Kennedy made a recliner out of sage brush
This guy cracks me up! I just love him
We ended up coming down a new road that ends up at Kobb Canyon Road. Went through Elk Valley and headed back towards Hardware
Found a heart in the mountain
We saw a TON of moose this trip. We sat and watched a HUGE bull and cow about 50 yards from us. His palms were HUGE. Then we ran across this bull and cow we had seen before. The bull has one semi normal palm on one side but the other looks more like antlers. One spikes across the front of his head and the others spike out the side
We saw 3 cow elk on this adventure when we were over looking a point by Rock Creek. They were 890 yards from us. Just for the fun of it Chris threw one round out there just to see. Didnt even phase them. We hurried around to the bottom of the canyon where they were coming down at and they were gone. We think one hunting group got one of the cows but we never found the other two. This has been the least we have ever seen elk before!!
